During the fifteen years before his death in 1970, S. Y. Agnon wrote an epic cycle of stories about Buczacz, the Galician town in which he grew up. This project represents a unique response to the Holocaust and an unprecedented effort to re-imagine the inner life of Polish Jewry during its golden age.

Arnold Band Distinguished Lecture in Jewish Studies

Alan Mintz is the Chana Kekst Professor of Hebrew Literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He was the founder and co-editor of the journal PROOFTEXTS. Among his books are Popular Culture and the Shaping of Holocaust Memory in America (University of Washington Press, 2001) and Translating Israel: The Reception of Hebrew Literature in America (Syracuse University Press, 2001). He is completing a critical study of 12 Hebrew poets who wrote in America between the two world wars of the 20th century, titled Sanctuary in the Wilderness: A Critical Introduction to American Hebrew Poetry (Stanford University Press, forthcoming).
