The Color of Marriage: Jews, Race, and Intermarriage in America
Jennifer Glaser (U of Cincinnati)
Faculty/Student Seminar Series This paper looks particularly at Hettie Jones’ memoir of her marriage to the poet LeRoi Jones/ Amiri Baraka, How I Became Hettie Jones (1990), Lore Segal’s novel Her First American (1985), and Gary Shteyngart’s recent Super Sad True Love Story (2010) to show the conjoined histories of gender and race in Jewish American culture during the period.
